Kiama is a family-friendly destination that works well with kids of all ages. The town is compact, walkable and built around beaches, parks and open spaces, which means less time in the car and more time enjoying your day.
This family guide focuses on simple, low-stress activities, playgrounds, safe swimming spots and places where kids can move freely while adults still get to relax.
Why Kiama Works So Well for Families
One of Kiama’s biggest strengths is how much you can do within a small area. Many of the best kid-friendly spots sit within walking distance of each other, particularly around the harbour, Black Beach and the town centre. There is no need to plan tightly or rush between locations.
You can easily structure your days around a park, a beach, a café and a swim, all without packing the kids back into the car every hour.
Where to Spend Most of Your Time
If you are visiting with kids, it helps to centre your plans around Kiama township, especially the area between Terralong Street, Black Beach and the harbour. This zone offers the highest concentration of playgrounds, calm water, cafés and facilities.
Parking is available around town, but once you are settled, most activities are reachable on foot or with a pram.
Playgrounds Kids Will Love
Hindmarsh Park Playground
This is Kiama’s largest and most popular playground and a must-visit for families.
Located between Terralong Street and Black Beach, Hindmarsh Park features modern play equipment, wide open grassy areas, shade, picnic tables and easy access to cafés and toilets. It suits toddlers through to older primary-school kids and is an ideal place to burn off energy.
Parents can grab coffee nearby while keeping a close eye on playtime, which makes it one of the easiest family stops in town.
Kendalls Beach Playground
Set beside the beach and grassy reserve, this smaller playground is perfect for younger children. The location allows you to combine playtime with a beach visit, picnic or relaxed walk along the sand. Free facilities are available within the Kendalls Beach Holiday Park.
Jones Beach Playground
A quieter option that works well if you want to avoid crowds. It is close to the beach and has a relaxed, local feel that suits slower afternoons. Public toilets are about 300m up the road.
Kid-Safe Water Play and Swimming
Black Beach and the Harbour
Black Beach is one of the best spots for families. The water is calm, shallow and protected, making it ideal for younger kids who want to paddle or swim without waves. It sits right next to the harbour, playgrounds and cafés, which makes it very easy to manage with kids. Beware the water might not be the cleanest as this is the harbour area, but it makes for a perfect spot to discover some lovely shells!
Blowhole Point Rock Pool
Located near the main blowhole and lighthouse, this rock pool offers a safe and contained place for kids to splash around. It is a great alternative to open surf beaches, especially on windy days.
Kendalls Beach
For families wanting a proper beach experience without heavy surf, Kendalls Beach is a strong choice. The wide grassy reserve makes it easy to set up for a long stay, and the small playground makes it more intriguing for kids.
Minnamurra River
A short drive north of Kiama, Minnamurra River is excellent for families. The calm river water suits swimming, floating and kayaking, and the surrounding parklands allow kids to explore safely. It is a good option if you want a change from ocean swimming without committing to a long drive.
Indoor and Structured Activities
Kiama Leisure Centre
The Kiama Leisure Centre is a reliable option for rainy days or when kids need structured activity. Facilities include indoor pools, programs and spaces suitable for a range of ages.
Jamberoo Action Park
For families with older kids, Jamberoo Action Park is around a 15-minute drive inland and works well as a full-day activity. With water slides, rides and large open areas, it is best planned as a single destination day rather than something to squeeze in between other activities.
Worth the Drive for a Big Swim Day
Port Kembla Olympic Pool
Around 30 minutes north of Kiama, the Port Kembla Olympic Pool is a standout family destination. It features a saltwater pool, toddler splash area, a smaller pool for kids and wide grassy surrounds.
This works best as a half-day or full-day outing, especially in warmer weather, and suits families with kids of mixed ages.
Easy Walks for Little Legs
Kiama offers several flat, pram-friendly walking options that suit kids who like to explore without getting tired too quickly.
- Harbour walks around Black Beach
- Short sections of the Kiama Coast Walk near town
- Paths around Minnamurra River and local parks
These walks allow kids to spot boats, birds and rock pools while adults enjoy the scenery.
Eating Out with Kids in Kiama
Kiama is generally very accommodating for families, with plenty of casual spots where kids feel welcome. Choosing central cafés keeps walking distances short and avoids loading everyone back into the car unnecessarily. One of our favourites is Stacks Eatery in Kiama Downs – there’s a kids station with colouring pages, pencils, stamps, and a few toys to keep little hands occupied.
Practical Tips for Visiting Kiama with Kids
- Bring hats, sunscreen and water bottles year-round, as UV levels can be high even on cooler days.
- Pack water shoes for rock pools and harbour swimming as the sharp shells can hurt little feet.
- Plan one main activity per day and let the rest unfold naturally.
- Early mornings and late afternoons are quieter and easier with children. Hide from the direct sun at midday & avoid crowds at the same time – win win.
- Base yourselves centrally to reduce travel time and maximise play.
Kiama is a Great Choice for Families
Kiama makes family travel feel simple. With playgrounds next to beaches, calm swimming spots, walkable streets and plenty of places to eat and rest, it allows kids to explore freely while adults stay relaxed.
It is a destination that works just as well for toddlers as it does for older children, and it rewards slow days, flexible plans and time spent outdoors.
